Luke Ayling is poised for at least a month on the sidelines following knee surgery.
The defender suffered a slight tear to his cartilage in training and will go under the knife today.
“It’s a blow,” said Pemberton on Bristol City Player HD.
“It was innocuous and we’ve had it scanned. It’s shown up a slight torn cartilage injury and it means he’ll have surgery today. It’s likely he’ll be missing for four to six weeks.”
Pemberton admitted it’s unlikely he will delve straight into the transfer market for a replacement.
“We’ve got Mark Little who has played that role before,” Pemberton said. “I think we need to wait until the knee settles down after surgery so we get a good idea of how long Luke will be missing.”
One week after the January transfer window closes, loan deals are an option for Football League clubs.
However, Pemberton added: “We have to be careful with the number of loans we have. We can only have five loan players in a matchday squad and we’ve got five already.”
