It's Observation Time For Johnson

Lee Johnson will keep a close eye on his players ahead of selecting his starting XI to face Aston Villa tomorrow night (Tuesday, 7.45pm).

The City head coach was delighted with the energetic display his players produced at Newcastle United on Saturday, in a thrilling 2-2 draw.

He included the likes of Aaron Wilbraham, Gary O’Neil and Korey Smith in his team for the gruelling encounter, with a combined two league starts in 2017 between the three of them.

Now Johnson must decide if they, along with others from the St James’ Park performance, are in a position to start in the Midlands.

“This is our second recovery day (Monday),” Johnson told Bristol City Player HD.

“We have to get that fine balance between seeing how a few are; there are a couple of knocks and niggles.

“It’s a bit of an observation day really. I want to see with my own eyes how they are.

“We’ll also get some genuine feedback from the players themselves.”

Tammy Abraham (thigh) and Mark Little (hamstring) are definitely out, while Milan Djuric (stomach) is also likely to be sidelined again.

Johnson also revealed he would be speaking to Chelsea today for an update on Abraham’s rehabilitation.

“We’d love to have him back involved for the Burton game (on Saturday) but I’d say that’s probably 60/40 against at this stage,” he added.
