Phase three of the stadium development begins in earnest next week though preparations are already well underway with relocations and removals aplenty. Almost every member of staff at Ashton Gate has been relocated, catering equipment taken away, furniture donated to local good causes and numerous items salvaged.
Clearing the stand itself has been a huge challenge with so many facilities still fully operational on Wednesday night. In addition to that all the offices, store-rooms, outbuildings, Spectrum (old Hire Rite) building and club shop have had to be cleared ready for demolition. Barr have even begun ‘soft-stripping’ the stand by removing seats while we’ve been clearing out the internal areas.
From next week, Barr will have possession of almost all the stadium site as they continue work on Phase 1 (South Stand), Phase 2 (Dolman Stand) and begin Phase 3 (Williams Stand, Spectrum Building, shop and outbuildings). Club staff still on-site are now concentrated in the Atyeo Stand and #65 Ashton Road which was until recently used as the Bristol City Community Trust’s study centre.
Meanwhile, Barr have now removed the temporary stairs into the Dolman Stand and demolished the front wall leaving a rather eerie open space underneath. There’s a great deal of work to do to refurbish the internal areas of the Dolman and of course to build the new seating deck. Work to ‘join’ the Dolman and South Stand is also well under way with the end gable column and bracing being removed.
In the next few weeks pitch renovations will also begin so it’s an exceptionally busy time at the stadium as we work towards the new season.
