This initiative continues the great work already being achieved by BSF and Feeding Bristol’s delivering the Children’s Kitchen video recipe series alongside active free play games on BSFs app to showcase the benefits of regular exercise and a healthy diet.
Today we are delighted to announce the next stage of that journey and the joining of local community kitchen and cookery school, Square Food Foundation, who have joined the partnership, to launch a pilot scheme at Oasis Academy Connaught on Friday 30th October.
The holiday camp will be split into morning and afternoon sessions, with the morning session being focussed on the delivery of sport and physical activity to help keep young people active and BSF’s Community Delivery Officer, Maickel English, spoke about the importance of keeping children active;
“It’s vitally important, now more than ever, to offer children the opportunity to be active. We know that physical activity levels dropped over lockdown and have seen the impact that this has had on our communities.”
“We work with Oasis Academy Connaught to deliver physical education throughout the academic year on a weekly basis so by extending our provisions into the school holidays we are best equipped to provide families with the tools they need to lead a healthier lifestyle.”
The second half of the day will be a lunchtime cooking session focussed on helping the children to cook, chop and make something delicious to eat. This part will be led by Jo Ingleby, Director of the Children’s Kitchen, and the wonderful team at Square Food Foundation.
Jo told us about the exciting things they have in store; “We will be cooking some simple and delicious Mexican themed food, themed around the Mexican Day of the Dead or Día de los Muertos, which takes place on November 2nd. With all the children being giving a recipe pack and meal kit to take home so they can share what they’ve learnt, and a home cooked meal, with the rest of the family!”
Jo continued; “The Children’s Kitchen are really excited to be working in partnership with Square Food Foundation, Bristol Sport Foundation and Oasis Academy Connaught. We bring food experiences and education to children and families across Bristol and linking this with physical activity is really important.”
This pilot project has been made possible thanks to a generous donation from Nascence Partner, Hargreaves Lansdown, who’s staff fundraised for BSF during lockdown to help support our work. We thank them for their continued support and advocacy.
