Kick In2 Shape
Kick In2 Shape combines educational, classroom-based activity – to discuss healthy lifestyles, diet and nutrition - with football sessions suitable to the needs of the group.
Participants are required to have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 27 to access the programme, which is delivered in some of the most inactive areas in Bristol.
The Community Trust currently runs two courses - at South Bristol Sports Centre (Wednesday, 6:30pm-8:30pm) and at Parish Wharf Leisure Centre in Portishead (Friday, 2pm-4pm).
“We looked at how the two could be combined with an hour of education, followed by an hour of football, which would maximise the best ways of educating, as well as keeping men active,” said programme manager, Geoff Stevens.
“Many of the participants we are targeting have either been inactive for a period of time, or have little activity time in their life. They are also within the target group of a BMI 27+.
“We have partnered with Thrive Tribe to deliver this project. They have provided many of the resources including work books and workshop activities.
“The course lasts for 12 weeks and looks at a variety of factors that contribute to a healthy lifestyle - 150 active minutes, two hours max screen time, three regular meals a day, manage portions and cut down on snacking.
“It also covers areas such as sugar intake, sleep and fluid intake, including alcohol.
“The football session caters for the needs of the group and will cover football fitness, games, and walking football. The aim over the 12 weeks is for those attending to lose 5% of their body weight.
“The course has proved very successful so far, with many taking part in activity for the first time in years, albeit a smaller group.”
The South Bristol group has already engaged 20 men, with the fitness sessions in particular have proving hugely popular.
