Last weekend’s victory over Yorkshire Carnegie was another good win for us because it shows that we are not just a team that goes out to score lots of tries, we can also manage a game too and grind out wins away from home.
Defensively, there have been some real improvements since December and, particularly in our last two games away from home; the collective effort against Rotherham Titans and Yorkshire has been immense. We can draw on those backs-to-the-wall experiences when it comes to the play-offs because, as we know, every play counts and we have to be solid.
I’m enjoying my rugby at the moment and the guys are in fantastic spirits. Obviously, it was great to make the Six Nations squad and to spend some time in the international environment again as it’s beneficial for my game to learn from such great players. I’ve been playing at full back quite a bit in the past month which has been great. To be honest, I just want to play rugby so it’s up to the coaches where they pick me, but it’s good to have that extra option.
We’ve secured our place in the play-offs now, so that’s one job ticked off. Ultimately, we have to be building for that first semi-final, whoever we come against. We can be full of confidence because we have been playing well and, on our day, we are a very difficult side to beat. There aren’t many games remaining in the regular season so we have to take advantage of every opportunity we get to pull on the hoops. It’s about fine-tuning what we are doing because at this point of the season, we all know our roles and responsibilities.
It’ll be great to be back at Ashton Gate this weekend against Cornish Pirates. They’re another side with plenty to play for so we can’t take them lightly. Whoever gets picked to play will be determined to prove a point to the coaches and deliver a performance for our supporters. It’s been said all season but there is so much competition for places at the moment, especially with Gav playing so well at fly half and Jack Wallace, Luke Arscott and Auguy Slowik all quality players in the full back position as well. Guys are returning to fitness at the right time and everything is in place for us to make a real push of it coming into the end of the season.
