Bristol’s Lily Owsley and Clifton Hockey’s Joie Leigh came on as substitutes during the Australia game, which was the team’s first victory of the tournament.
After a defeat to Argentina and a draw with China, Danny Kerry’s side needed a win and the 26th minute strike from Helen Richardson-Walsh secured the win over World No2 Australia.
Great Britain went into the half time break ahead and just five minutes into the second half Bristol’s Lily Owsley showed blistering pace to get away from the defence but she couldn’t quite find the back of the net.
Leigh and Owsley worked together to cause problems for Australia with another strong run. Joie Leigh kept their keeper on her toes after following up a shot from Townsend forcing her to make a double save.
Despite the pressure Great Britain couldn’t find a second goal.
Great Britain take on New Zealand in the quarter finals today (Thursday, December 10th) at 4pm.
