“We had to show a completely different skill set today than we normally do,” said the Vixens Manager.
“We’ve said that time and again that during the season you have to a show a few different faces, today was about digging in and the players putting their bodies on the line for each other. You could see the determination in the team when we went 1-0 down, for us to come back like that shows the character within this group and that is immensely pleasing.”
The Vixens Manager doesn’t conform to the opinion that the game was an even contest on Saturday night.
“I thought Liverpool had the majority of the game to be honest, I said that to the players that we had to do something different because we like to have the ball,” he added.
“We have found it hard to dominate the ball in this league, but we try and keep it as much as possible and that was the case today. At half-time we felt we had something to build on, Liverpool looked shaky when we went at them, but it was just a case of doing it more often and with more conviction.”
Kirk says the players should take confidence from the performance into the final two Spring Series matches.
“The players will dictate that, but they should definitely take confidence,” said Kirk
“I boldly set them a target recently that they had to take something from these last three games. I know it’s Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal and that’s easier said than done, but they’ve done it today and now can they push on and take something from the last two games.”
After a goal scoring drought, Kirk insists he doesn’t mind who scored the goal and where it came from.
“It doesn’t matter in the slightest, I don’t care who scored it,” he added
“I’ll re-watch it tomorrow and I’m sure I’ll find out but what matters is that we did get the goal and it’s something to build on now.”
Chelsea are up next for the Vixens and Kirk says he relieved to be able to prepare for the game with a normal training week after an intense period.
“We will finally get a normal weeks training, they’ll get a couple of days off to recover as opposed to doing recovery in-house.
“We will have an intense week following that, with a couple of hard sessions in there just to top up the fitness levels and then we can look forward to Chelsea and start preparing for that one.”
