The 16-year-old Bristol Sport racer extended his lead at the top in Taupo after his best weekend in the championship so far with M2 Competition.

And with two more poles in qualifying, it was a dominant display from start to finish.

The ADD Motorsports driver said: “The whole weekend went really well, the only thing that could have been a bit better was the second race, but it was difficult.

“I have improved in lots of areas. My restarts from the safety car and pace in the last two races were really good.

“Getting another double pole, as well as two wins and a second place, was a good effort and it’s helped my chances of winning the championship.”

Although Lando wasn’t the fastest driver in practice, his pace was decent, but with the team deciding against using the new set of tyres during testing they knew they were going to be at a slight disadvantage not knowing how the car would react.

The car wasn’t perfect during qualifying because of this, but Lando still managed to find the pace to notch up the fastest lap in the first session by 1.5 tenths.

Some tweaks to the car improved things and he managed to get another pole in qualifying two, giving him seven poles from eight in the competition so far.

Race one was hard, with Lando struggling with the set-up to start with and under a lot of pressure from Pedro Piquet. But he managed to hold on for the win in the end.

With the reverse grid putting Lando back in eighth for race two – after he picked the lowest number out of a hat again – he got off to a great start and into fourth straight away.

A perfect restart after a safety car saw him almost take the lead, but instead he settled for finishing in second place by the end of the race.

Race three was Lando’s best performance, with the new set-up of the car helping him pull away every lap and leaving him with a large lead by the end.

Lando finished the weekend on 735 points, with Pedro Piquet in second place on 649. And with just one weekend left, he knows the title is in his hands.

He added: “Heading into the last weekend of TRS, I have a decent gap, but I still need to push hard and do my best.

“It’s the final weekend so I’m going enjoy it with the team.”
