Ashton Gate Stadium lights blue in support of the NHS

Ashton Gate Stadium has joined the growing group of iconic buildings and landmarks to light blue across the country every Thursday night in a show of thanks and respect to the NHS and frontline care workers.

The Stadium, which in January became one of the first seven Covid-19 super vaccination hubs,  has been delivering thousands of jabs every day to people from Bristol and surrounding areas.

Ashton Gate Managing Director, Mark Kelly, said: “By lighting the Stadium blue, we are delighted to include our own visual tribute to all those NHS staff and frontline volunteers who are working round the clock to beat the pandemic.”

In common with Wembley Stadium, Twickenham Stadium, and Blackpool Tower, Ashton Gate has embraced the #LightItBlue campaign, which kicked off for the second time at the beginning of January.

The campaign, which originally launched in March 2020, was devised by MAKEITBLUE CIC - a group of event and entertainment industry professionals who inspired event venues to light their buildings and screens blue in honour of the NHS. Over 100 major conference, sporting and entertainment venues, national landmarks and historic buildings across the country answered the call, including Windsor Castle, 10 Downing Street and London’s Tower Bridge.  Many of those venues continue to light blue during the current lockdown.

At venues where no staff are working on site, the illuminations are being activated remotely using LED technology so that the Government’s instructions to stay home are being strictly observed.

Tim Owen, Director of MAKEITBLUE CIC, said: “This initiative has come from an industry known for its creativity and from individuals who wanted to harness their skills to salute doctors, nurses and other frontline workers. We’re delighted that Ashton Gate, which is playing such a vital role in the NHS’ vaccination programme right now, should have joined our campaign.”

All organisations involved in the #LightItBlue campaign are acting on a pro bono basis.
