Ashton Gate Supplies Surplus Food For St. Mungo’s

Ashton Gate has partnered with homeless charity St Mungo’s to provide a local women’s shelter with surplus matchday food.

St. Mungo’s is a national charity which, for more than 50 years has been at the forefront of efforts to tackle homelessness. Year on year it seeks to provide solutions with, and for, people who are sleeping rough or facing homelessness; putting them at the heart of efforts to help them fulfil their hopes and ambitions.

Following a successful stadium trial throughout last season, food which is left unsold at the end of a matchday is transferred less than a mile away to one of St. Mungo’s hostels for women

Ashton Gate Managing Director, Mark Kelly said: “We’re proud to partner with St Mungo’s and provide the shelter with surplus food from the stadium. Some of our products, especially pies and pasties, can’t be re-used once cooked. These items would otherwise have to be thrown away but by transferring these a short distance we not only reduce food wastage but also help those within our immediate community."

Kate Windsor, Deputy Project Manager at St Mungo’s said: “At St Mungo’s we focus on supporting individuals with complex needs and work hard to prevent homelessness across Bristol.

“It's important to build good working relationships with local organisations and we are so pleased to have Ashton Gate’s support. The stadium’s weekly food donations make a huge difference to us and are greatly appreciated by our clients.”

Meanwhile, Ashton Gate has also extended the rent-free lease for FareShare South West to operate a major food warehouse at Ashton Gate until 2023. Since FareShare South West opened the facility more than two years ago, the warehouse has processed the equivalent of 4.7 million meals to those living with food insecurity.

In doing so, more than 132 tonnes of food has been diverted from landfill saving 52 tonnes of carbon emissions.

Ashton Gate sits in the heart of its community and will continue to support and help those in need.
