Ashton Gate/Bristol Sport wins ‘Business in the Community’ award

Ashton Gate/Bristol Sport wins ‘Business in the Community’ at South West Business Leader Awards 2018.

The sell-out event, hosted by comedian Russell Kane saw Mark Kelly, managing director of Ashton Gate step-up to receive the award alongside representatives from the whole sporting group.

The award recognised the impact the £45m redevelopment of Ashton Gate has had on both the local economy and the local community.

“A central part of the investment in Ashton Gate was to build a sustainable business to sit at the very heart of the South Bristol community,” said Mark Kelly.

“Steve Lansdown had a vision to inspire the community through sport. Two years in and we are seeing that vision become a reality. As one of the largest employers in the city, Ashton Gate is now a thriving work and entertaining space as well as one of the premier sports stadiums in the country.”

The award took into account not just the financial impact of the stadium but also that it is home to its associated charities of Bristol City Community Trust, Bristol Bears Community Foundation, Flyers Community and Bristol Sport Foundation.

Dan White (CEO, Bristol City Community Trust), Ben Breeze (chief community officer, Bristol Sport Foundation) and Craig Capel (CDM, Bristol Bears Community Foundation) join Mark Kelly (MD, Ashton Gate) and Lisa Knights (chief of communications) on stage.

Craig Capel from Bristol Bears Community Foundation said: “It’s great that the work that we are all doing to promote sporting engagement across the city is fundamentally making a difference to people’s lives and is constantly expanding.

“I feel very honoured that we’ve won this award. Working together as a sporting group has helped us drive sporting engagement across so many different areas; from primary school children and holiday camps, to special needs provision and working alongside the over-55s to try and combat isolation and dementia.”

The annual Bristol Sport Gala Dinner takes places on Wednesday, 5th December 2018. To book your ticket, please email: commercial@bristol-sport.co.uk
