Bristol Central Clinch Bronze In British Water Polo Champs

Bristol Central Water Polo battled it out in a dramatic comeback to take the bronze medal at the British Water Polo Championships.

The team travelled to Gloucester on Saturday, for a weekend of water polo finals. First up was the semi-final against Manchester which saw Bristol Central fall just short after a hard fought game.

With a 10-7 win, Manchester went on to play Cheltenham for the gold medal as Bristol were left to face Lancaster for the bronze.

The game saw numerous major fouls which left Central to finish the game playing man down for the final two minutes after all bench players were on three major fouls.

The game was level at 18-18 until Bristol centre forward, Hamish Hudson received his third and Lancaster scored from the man-up advantage. Central had to attack to try to equalise and coach John Sissons called a timeout after Central won a corner.

With just 30 seconds on the clock Bristol equalised with a long shot from the bottom corner. Lancaster came back with two shots but Bristol’s Andrew Crawford pulled off two superb saves to ensure the game finished level.

The game then went to penalties where Bristol scored four while stand-out performer Crawford saved two from Lancaster and Bristol clinched the bronze.

Bristol Central Coach, John Sissons: "I am so proud of the team after the effort in the two games this weekend.”

He added: “Great composure was needed and we managed to show that when everything seemed to be going against us.

“We produced our performance of the year against Manchester in the semi-final and we were very close. But it wasn’t to be and we picked ourselves up well to go again.  It was a very strange game, but again the boys dug deep and produced a remarkable finish.”
