Bristol Sport backing 25-year anniversary of Wrong Trousers Day

The Grand Appeal is gearing up for a bumper summer of fundraising across Bristol and the South West as it marks the 25th Anniversary of the iconic dress-down event, Wallace & Gromit’s Wrong Trousers Day.

Taking place on Friday 1st July 2022, this year’s Wrong Trousers Day, which is kindly sponsored by Nutricia, will be bigger and better in celebration of these two much-loved Bristol characters. And as ever, it’s really easy to get involved.

The Grand Appeal is asking people to join the party by digging out their weirdest and wackiest wrong trousers and paying £1 to raise money to support the critically ill babies and children at Bristol Children’s Hospital and St Michael’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

So, whether its about a sashay in sequin covered stockings, parading in pyjamas, or flapping some funky flares… it’s called Wrong Trousers Day for a reason and The Grand Appeal want everyone to let their imaginations run wild in the name of donating for the right to look wrong.

With so many fundraising activities to choose from, everyone can get involved this year and lend their support:

  • Schools who sign up for Wrong Trousers Day 2022 could be in for a special treat. With the first 25 to register being entered into a special prize draw, the successful school wins an exclusive model-making session with Aardman Animations, the home of Wallace & Gromit. There’s also lots of classroom activities and worksheets on The Grand Appeal website.
  • Hundreds of local businesses have supported Wrong Trousers Day over the 25 years raising hundreds of thousands of pounds. The corporate fundraising pack includes lots of ideas, including sponsoring your boss, hosting a fashion show or simply turning up to work looking fabulous in your wrong trousers – workplaces could even offer a prize as an extra incentive.
  • There’s also loads of ideas on how to set up a Wrong Trousers Day’s fundraising event to bring together family and friends to join the fun.
  • All the money raised on Wrong Trousers Day supports the amazing work of the Bristol Children’s Hospital, which treats over 100,000 young patients each year from all corners of the South West and South Wales.

£200 raised could fund a week’s stay in The Grand Appeal’s family accommodation, allowing parents to stay close to their child, rather than facing a potentially long-distance daily commute.  £100 could fund two music therapy sessions, helping children to express their feelings and focus on something other than their treatment.

Nicola Masters, director of The Grand Appeal, explains: “Since its launch in 1997, Wrong Trousers Day has been one of the most celebrated and supported heritage fundraising events across the South West with hundreds of thousands of people from schools, companies, families and friends taking part.

It is a lot of fun and the people of Bristol and beyond have really taken it into their hearts over the years, with these iconic characters recognised and loved in every home and across all ages.”

Over the years the likes of Gary Lineker, Ainsley Harriet, Baddiel and Skinner, Richard and Judy and Michaela Strachan have all donned their wrong trousers in aid of the cause.

Nicola adds: Whether you choose to support us by hosting a BBQ in your wrong trousers, sponsoring your boss to swap smart for suitably wrong trousers, or you try and outdo your mates in the classroom with your ‘new uniform’, all your support will raise funds for critically ill babies and children at the South West region’s dedicated children’s hospital in Bristol.

Anyone can sign up their businesses and colleagues, schools, friends, family to register for their Wrong Trousers Day pack. The packs contain everything you’ll need to run your own fundraising campaign, be it a business, school or individual. There’s also a host of additional Wrong Trousers Day materials to be found on The Grand Appeal website, from posters and bingo to sweepstakes and even guides on how to make your own wrong trousers.
