Bristol Sport Foundation donates £5k to quartet’s Atlantic challenge

Bristol Sport Foundation has pitched in to help the fundraising efforts of a brave quartet who are preparing to row the Atlantic in aid of The Movember Foundation.

The ‘Nuts Over the Atlantic’ team, made up of Dan Baker, Steve Baker, Mark Gibson and Jon Lakin, will take on the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge - one of the toughest races on Earth – in December 2017, rowing more than 3,000 nautical miles across the world's second largest ocean, the Atlantic.

Bristol Sport Foundation has donated £5,000 to the teams’ cause, as they head west from San Sebastian in La Gomera before finishing in Nelson's Dockyard English Harbour in Antigua – and Martin Griffiths, trustee for Bristol Sport Foundation and chairman of Ashton Gate Stadium, said the charity is delighted to support them.

“This is an incredible challenge for an incredible cause and Bristol Sport Foundation is pleased to be donating £5,000 towards Jon, Dan, Steve and Mark’s fundraising efforts,” he said.

“In the build up to the race they will be talking about the importance of health and education through sport, which is very much part of what we do.

“We wish them the very best of luck, first with their training and fundraising and then with the challenge itself, which is certain to test them mentally and physically. We look forward to keeping up to date with their progress.”

“Nuts over the Atlantic are delighted to welcome the Bristol Sport Foundation on board with our campaign,” said Jon Lakin, a member of the hardy quartet.

“This is an incredible challenge for an incredible cause and Bristol Sport Foundation is pleased to be donating £5,000 towards Jon, Dan, Steve and Mark’s fundraising efforts.”

“We undertook this 3,000-mile row across the Atlantic not only to raise £100,000 towards research for testicular cancer, prostate cancer, mental health and suicide prevention, but to also inspire others to believe that nothing is impossible.

“With the support provided by Bristol Sport Foundation, we have taken a significant step towards achieving this aim.

“We would like to say a huge thank you to Bristol Sport Foundation for its donation and we are incredibly honoured they have chosen to support us.”
