Case study: Womble Bond Dickinson enjoying Reading Stars scheme

Staff at the Bristol branch of Nascence Project partners, law firm Womble Bond Dickinson, are looking forward to continuing their support of the Reading Stars programme.

Reading Stars sees volunteers from local business assist primary school children with their literacy on a weekly basis, helping pupils build their skills and confidence in a relaxed environment.

The Nascence Project is Bristol Sport Foundation’s business and community engagement programme, designed to bring business and community together through the life-changing impact of sport.

Transatlantic law firm Womble Bond Dickinson, which has its second largest office in Bristol, is now into its third year of involvement in the Reading Stars programme, and Jonathan Bower, Bristol Head of Responsible Business, said: "We have been supporting Bristol Sport Foundation and its Reading Stars programme for a number of years, volunteering at local schools to provide children in our community with literacy assistance and help them to build the skills for life and work.

“Each week we have five volunteers attending reading sessions with 15 children from across the school.

“Reading is a skill which impacts our lives every day, and we are proud to be able to support the development of children across schools.

“Confidence also plays a huge part in learning so being able to provide a role model to the children is a great way to support the local community.

"The programme has been hugely beneficial for pupils and it is a brilliant scheme for our volunteers to be part of, knowing that they are directly supporting a child's development.

“This year the WBD team is looking forward to the challenge of supporting Year Six students, who during a testing year will benefit greatly from the additional attention and support."
