Clifton Ladies Crowned Investec Cup Winners

Clifton Ladies were crowned national hockey champions after victory in the Investec Women’s Cup final in the Olympic Park on Saturday.

Els Mansell scored the only goal of the game as Clifton overcame Buckingham at the Lee Valley Hockey Centre.

Skipper Aileen Davies lifted the trophy, putting to bed painful memories of defeat at the hands of Surbiton in last year’s final, while Claire Thomas collected the tournament’s top goalscorer award.

Clifton Ladies’ second team were unable to make it a double celebration on the day, going down 2-0 to the University of Birmingham in the Second XI Cup.

But the quality and depth of talent on show from the Bristol-based club was clear to see in having two teams competing for winner’s medals.

Elsewhere, fellow local side Robinsons, based in Redland, were triumphant in the Over-40 Men’s Cup final, and Werys (Redland and UWE) won the Over-45 Ladies’ Plate competition.
