Festival Of Youth Sport To Inspire Olympic Athletes Of The Future

Over 1000 children from schools across the region will get involved in Bristol Sport's Festival Of Youth Sport, an Olympic style event at SGS College on June 6th 2015.

The Festival of Youth Sport, sponsored by Bristol Sport, will test the Olympic spirit of six to eleven year olds. The youngsters from over 60 schools will be given guidance from members of the Bristol Flyers professional basketball team, Bristol Academy Women's football team plus past and present Olympic sports stars. This year the event, which has been running for over ten years, will be held at SGS College.

Kim Hazeldine, from South Gloucestershire Schools PE Association, says the event is there to inspire.

"The festival gives a huge number of young people an opportunity to experience an Olympic style tournament at a local level. Some former participants have even gone on to represent their country. It has been a success in the past and we have no doubt it will be the same this year. The aim is to encourage an enthusiasm for sport in Bristol".

Local youngsters will get to experience what it is like to take part in a major sporting event, a perfect set-up for the fast approaching 2016 Olympics in Rio. Eight different sports will be included from traditional ones like football and basketball to archery and seated volleyball.

Vicky Barlow from Bristol Sport said:

“I've personally been involved with this festival for a few years now and it is a wonderful opportunity to inspire kids to get involved - often in sports that they've never even tried.

"I'm proud that Bristol Sport is supporting the event and we are pleased that we can help it grow."

Event Details: Saturday, June 6th, 9:30am, SGS College
