Foundation coach makes international bow at Principality Stadium

Bristol Sport Foundation community head coach, Maickel English (pictured left), has been making a real difference in schools across Bristol since joining in September, but he has also been turning heads on the international rugby stage.

Maickel who has been a rugby referee for three seasons - spending his weekends officiating in the Welsh Premiership - made his first appearance as a fourth official at last weekend’s Autumn international clash between Wales and New Zealand at the Principality Stadium, Cardiff.

He previously featured as the AR5 (Assistant Referee 5) for the Wales versus England match in the 2017 Six Nations Tournament, and also refereed in the Anglo-Welsh Cup match between Newport Gwent Dragons and Northampton Saints earlier this season.

Maickel has been coaching on Bristol Sport Foundation’s Forever Sport programme, delivering high-quality PE and sports coaching to primary schools throughout Greater Bristol.

“Maickel has been a tremendous addition to our coaching team,” said community development manager, Tom Monks.

“He is calm, measured and a brilliant communicator, which are clearly skills that are equally important to be a top-flight rugby official.”

“Well done Maickel, no doubt in time you will refereeing on the hallowed turf of Ashton Gate.”
