Great Britain Women Go Down To New Zealand In World League Quarter Finals

A last-minute strike from New Zealand condemned Great Britain to a dramatic defeat in the Argentina Hockey World League quarter finals.

Great Britain showed their attacking intent from the whistle but couldn’t score. In the 22nd minute, the Blacksticks took the lead. Great Britain’s keeper made two excellent saves in quick succession but they were unable to clear their lines, which gave New Zealand the chance to slot the third effort in the corner.

Great Britain had plenty of chances but the Blacksticks’ keeper showed her worth and didn’t let anything past her.

New Zealand’s Anita Punt was shown a yellow card meaning Great Britain would start the final quarter with a player advantage.

Great Britain’s Helen Richardson-Walsh made no mistake when she took a penalty and leveled the scores with a low finish.

The game looked like it was heading for a shootout until Olivia Merry’s backhand strike found its way past Great Britain’s keeper to send New Zealand into the semi finals.
