It's The Games We're In Football For - Cotterill

Birmingham City loanee David Cotterill is aiming to get one over on his parent club’s bitter rivals Aston Villa tonight (7.45pm kick-off).

The winger scored his first goal back in the red and white of City in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with promotion-chasing Newcastle United.

That match was played in front of a 52,000-plus crowd, and another bumper attendance is expected for City’s first visit to Villa Park since 1979.

“Since I’ve returned here we’ve played in some great places,” Cotterill told Bristol City Player HD. “We’ve had tough games at Leeds, Newcastle and now Villa.

“Playing in ground likes those – It’s the kind of games where you really don’t need a teamtalk. It’s what you are in football for.

“If we can come away from Villa with a win or a draw then it will be a good return from these tough two away games.

“We need to keep ticking over and keep producing performances like the one at Newcastle on Saturday to stay in this division.”

Cotterill’s goal at St James’ Park was a quirky one, as defender and goalkeeper combined to give him a tap in at the Gallowgate End.

“Our game plan was to get as close to Alby (Aaron Wilbraham) as possible, given he was the loan striker,” Cotterill added.

“I took a gamble and chased Gary O’Neil’s ball forward. The keeper and the defender had a little mix-up and I was delighted to stick the ball into the empty net.

“We deserved our two-goal lead and we were disappointed to let it slip. We didn’t crumble though and we have to see it as a point gained.”
