Match Report: Clifton Hockey 1-2 Canterbury

Clifton Ladies Hockey knocked out of League Play-Offs after narrow defeat.

Clifton Hockey went into their play-off semi-final game with lots of confidence after more than 80 fans travelled from Bristol to support them. The first quarter was a cagey affair with Canterbury looking to catch Clifton on the break. Clifton used their passing game to try and break the opposition down.

The second quarter saw more attacking play from Clifton only to concede two quick goals, one from a short corner and one from open play.‬

After half time Clifton came out the stronger side and their quick passing was rewarded by a goal from Claire Thomas with a neat deflection, following a weaving run through the Canterbury defence from Joie Leigh.

From then on it was Clifton on the attack and the West Country team created a number of chances only to be denied by some excellent goalkeeping from Canterbury. As Clifton pushed more players forward, Caitlin Jefferies in the Clifton goal, had to be at her very best to deny the Canterbury forwards on two occasions.‬

‪‪Clifton thought they had equalised from a Liz Sinton shot only to see the umpire signal the shot as dangerous.

Despite the disappointment of their equaliser being disallowed they fought right until the final whistle when they won a short corner. It wasn't to be, Clifton's valiant effort was over and their chance to reach Europe gone for another year.‬
