NOTA update: 'close encounters with sea life an incredible experience'

As Nuts Over The Atlantic head into the final 300 NM of their mammoth 3,000-mile Talisker Whiskey Challenge, the quartet have made some new friends at sea.

A pod of dolphins showed up to give the Nuts some brief company on the home straight, while the lads have also come into contact with whales and a ‘shoal of predatory fish’. NOTA are currently predicted to arrive in Antigua on the evening of February 6th.

“We started this crossing hoping to see wildlife,” said Mark Gibson. “After taking a more direct route across the Atlantic to try and catch up with the rest of the fleet, we didn't have high hopes.

“However, we have been incredibly lucky and words can't express how blessed we feel. Over the past two weeks we have come within feet of two whales, whilst they inspected us and our boat for 40 minutes.

“We also seem to have made friends with a shoal of predatory fish, who have used our boat for 1000+ miles as a great hunting tool.

A pod of dolphins cruise past the Nuts vessel.
Mark Gibson takes a break from rowing.

“The predators make flying fish jump out of the water and into the side of our boat, so that the now dazed/knocked out flying fish are easy prey.
“We thought this was amazing enough, however, this morning we have just been visited by a pod of dolphins.

“The photos we have do not do the experience justice, but you can just make out their fins in this shot. Safe to say we were buzzing for the rest of the day.”
