NOTA update: ‘it’s terrifying but awesome at the same time’

The Nuts Over the Atlantic team, currently in the early stages of their 3,000-mile Talisker Whiskey Rowing Challenge, say they are making good progress as they attempt to make up ground on the other race competitors.

The quartet, who are sponsored by Bristol Sport Foundation, were forced to delay their start by three days due to issues with their vessel, but have since made good headway in their attempt to catch the other teams.

Nuts are now five days into their challenge – which is expected to take around 40 days – with the lads describing their experience so far as ‘terrifying but awesome at the same time’.

"We’re quite tired, to be honest, but the ocean is like nothing I have ever experienced - it's terrifying but awesome at the same time”, said Steve Baker.

"We are definitely struggling at some points but we keep pushing through.

"I really can't explain rowing up a 20ft wave in the dead of night with nothing preparing you, but the night sky does look incredible.

“We haven't seen any sea life yet, but we've had the bioluminescent plankton floating around."

Jon Lakin added: "It’s getting better, but the nights are tough. We've hit some awesome waves so should be over taking some teams soon.”
