Report: Festival Of Youth Sport

More than 1,000 Bristol school children competed in the Festival Of Youth Sport this weekend, run by South Gloucestershire PE Association and sponsored by Bristol Sport.

The youngsters from over 60 schools competed in an Olympic-style multi-sport event under the guidance South Gloucestershire PE Association and members of the Bristol Flyers professional basketball team and Bristol Academy Women’s Football Club.

The day kicked off with an Olympic-style opening ceremony with each school representing a different country.

The festival featured eight different sports giving the children a chance to sample each. Organiser Kim Hazledine, from South Gloucestershire Schools PE Association, was delighted with the event:

"It's really important with primary school children to get them to play many different sports before they decide what to specialise in.

"Our aim is to inspire the children to take part in sport and to be the best they can be."

Hazledine added: "It really helps that we've got Bristol Sport on board as sponsors. Having the Bristol Flyers basketball and Bristol Academy football players here for them to look up to and see as role models is great.

"It's amazing to hear what they've achieved and pass this on to the children."
