Trust Students Get Set For Christmas Walk

Bristol City Community Trust’s students will take part in a Christmas Walk this weekend to raise funds for Young Carers.

Since the turn of the new academic year, 50 Bristol City Community Trust students, in partnership with YouthMoves, have engaged in National Citizen Service (NCS) – a project that acts as a gateway to the big society for many young people.

The overriding aim of the three-phased programme is to promote a more cohesive, responsible and engaged society. This is accomplished by mixing participants of varying backgrounds, helping them develop greater confidence, self-awareness and responsibility.

Now on the final stage of the programme, where participants are required to conduct a social action project for a Bristol-based charity of their choice, two of the four groups have opted to support the work of Young Carers.

Young Carers is a charity for children and young people who look after someone in their family who has a disability, long-term illness, or is affected by mental ill health or substance misuse.

Whilst the projects key aim is to raise familiarity of the charity, the Trust’s students are also driven to reward the Young Carers and give them the opportunity to escape their traditional routine for the day.

When asked what the charity’s ‘dream day’ would consist of, as a reward for their tireless efforts, the response was a trip to Harry Potter Land.

Determined to raise £1,000 to cover the costs of 16 Young Carers, the Trust’s students have conducted a cake sale and raffle, whilst holding a bucket collection at the recent Ipswich Town fixture, raising a total of £346.

The next fundraising event is this Saturday (December 10th), when scholars will embark on a sponsored Christmas Walk in fancy dress from Ashton Gate to Cabot Circus.
