The 15-year-old Carlin racer claimed his sixth victory of the season at Rockingham to leapfrog Collard to the top of the leaderboard. It left him 17 points clear with just six races left.

And as the competition moves to Silverstone, the ADD Motorsports-supported driver hopes to keep his focus, get a win and ultimately keep his lead going into the final weekend.

He said: “I’m really excited going into this weekend. It’s going to be really tough as there are quite a few straights and only four corners, so it’s going to be hard to pull away.

“But I’m hoping for consistent Top 3 places and a win or wins. I need to try to better Collard’s results and make sure I don’t make any mistakes.

“My team has done a really great job so far and I feel really strong.”

Lando was happy with his performances during this weekend’s outing for Mücke Motorsport – in the Italian F4 at Imola.

The Bristol Sport racer qualified in tenth and third place on a track he’d never been to before – while his competitors had tested and raced there previously.

From his tenth-place start he managed to finish fifth in the first race – closing down the leading pack near the end.

In the second race, he finished last after another driver came across him – making contact and putting his steering out.

Lando was given a five-place penalty for his part in the incident, leaving him starting eighth in the final race.

He managed to get back to fourth, but with time spent battling the drivers to get back into the race, the leaders had a big lead.

Although he managed to close the gap considerably and put on the fastest lap again, it wasn’t enough for a podium finish.

After now bowing out of the Championship due to other commitments, he added: “I improved as the weekend went on and if we had had the chance to test, I’m sure I would have been up there.

“I’ve really enjoyed the experience. It’s been good working with the team and getting to race on different tracks.

“I’ve definitely learnt a lot and improved my driving which has helped me back in England.

“But now I have to turn my attention back to Silverstone – I’m confident we can have another strong weekend.”

Qualifying takes place at 10.30am on Saturday, 26 September with the first race starting at 3.10pm.
