One of the most successful water polo teams in the country, Bristol Central, will kick-off their campaign on Saturday in Sheffield, with a tough match against last year’s runners up Lancaster, followed by a Sunday afternoon match against newly promoted Northumbria.

The Bristol team which is led by former GB international goalkeeper Andy Crawford and  coached by former international John Sissons, finished fourth last season and will be looking to reclaim the champion’s title that they have held five times previously.

After a successful pre-season build-up the Sissons said:

“We’ve had a much stronger preparation this year with pre-season starting almost three months ago. We’ve played and won all four of our friendlies leading into this weekend so we will look to build on that.

“That said, we have a very young team this year. We have four 17-year-olds two of whom we welcome from Hungary and Georgia who have come to the area to study.

“I’ve been really impressed with how they’ve settled in and look forward to seeing how we go in the first game against Lancaster”.

The British Water Polo League takes place over seven weekends with the first three in Sheffield, Sunderland (October 31st/November 1st) and Cardiff (November 21st/22nd). The top five teams in the league of eight will then go on to compete in the Super 5s for the remaining four weekends.
