What time does your alarm go off?
It normally goes off at 7.09am, and if I am really tired I will snooze and then I am chasing it. But I do make sure that I am in at 8.10am as we have a staff meeting at 8.30am.
What’s the first thing you do when you get to work?
I go to the photocopier normally and every day I have a scrap with it. I think I need a lesson in photocopying because I can’t seem to print on both sides and in colour!
Before working at the company, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?
It’s always been football but I used to try and wash cars around the estate to get a bit more pocket money when I was younger and I also did the tuck shop out of my bag at school, so I was quite entrepreneurial really.
How long have you worked for the company?
I think it’s around nine years, nearly 10, with a bit of a break in the middle
What do you like most about working for the company?
The people. The people that I work with, that’s the most important thing as you want a nice working environment. I enjoyed my time here as a player at Bristol City and that comes down to the people that you mix with – as a team and the staff, and now my team is my staff. It’s a great place to work and I am very grateful to enjoy my work.
How do you define success?
In a football sense I think that success is to keep driving forward, everyday should be successful it can’t always be measured apart from tangible results, but I believe that there are so many mini successes at the football club and if those mini successes accumulate then we will find that dream which is the ultimate success – promotion. So success for me is driving the club forward, no matter the circumstance.
What does leadership mean to you?
I think that leadership is the ability to influence and inspire. I think that the influential side of it is to get the players/ team to work the way you want to work and implement the ideas that are in your head. The inspirational part is you have to make people around you better and the only way they get better is if they love their job and love what they do.
How do you balance your career and family?
It’s difficult – the family work balance is never an easy one. I have tried to put a lot of procedures in place and I took a good look at myself in the summer as the balance was probably off and as a result I think that it has been much better this year.
What 2019 concert are you looking forward to most at Ashton Gate?
I have been banned from seeing the Spice Girls as my wife and daughter are going to it, which I feel very upset about, as I liked the Spice Girls as a kid. However, I am really looking forward to Take That and well, Rod Stewart is Rod Stewart! If I could have a dinner and pick a few people he would definitely be sat next to me.
