By the end of June more than 30,000 meals will have been delivered to the local community as part of a unique partnership with Ashton Gate, FareShareSW and the sports teams’ foundations – Bristol Bears, Bristol City Robins, Bristol Sport/Flyers.

Bristol Sport has established a special Covid-19 Emergency Relief Fund to spearhead the fundraising. Key donations from the Masonic Charitable Foundation and Bristol-based Sanderson Solutions Group have enabled the programme to continue to grow.

Bristol Sport Chairman Jon Lansdown said: “Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank everyone involved and for all of their efforts to date. You should be immensely proud of what you have achieved so far.

“This project has grown quickly and organically from the first week of the official lockdown back in March. Our stadium sits in the heart of the Bristol community and we wanted to be able to reach out and help.

“The need was immediately apparent, as it already exists during normal school holidays, but with the unexpected school closures it has grown even more rapidly.

“Bringing together our sporting charities alongside the facilities (both storage and kitchens) at Ashton Gate we worked fast to grow a large and efficient operation to ensure thousands of meals could get to those who need it most in our community.

“We’ve grown from preparing and delivering 300 meals per week to more than 4,250 and there’s still more to come. It’s been possible because of the insight and knowledge that our sporting charities have of their local community. Working with schools, teachers, coaches, Avon and Somerset Police and the council, we’ve identified those children and families most in need.”
